Courses Offered and Course Description

HFT 3503 
Hospitality Marketing Strategy

Description:  Examines marketing principles, theories and concepts and the use of management principles and techniques of analysis, planning, implementation and control to maximize marketing effectiveness in hospitality organizations.  Stresses marketing of service.

HFT 3700
Fundamentals of Tourism

Description:  An introduction to the broad fields of travel and tourism.  Among the topics covered are cultural tourism, eco-tourism, sociology of tourism, tourism components and supply, tourism development, the economic role of tourism demand, and the marketing of tourism.

HFT 4727
Travel Industry Law

Description:  Legal strategies, tactics and principles for the multi-faceted travel industry.  Covers applicable statutes, regulations and developing nation situations.  Prerequisites:  HFT 3700.

Biography

Dr. Remington's business career began with Parker Hannifin Corporation in Cleveland, where she held positions in human resources, aviation sales and marketing and international corporate offices. For nearly ten years she was an executive with the Sheraton Corporation of the Pacific in Honolulu, involved in sales and marketing of the Princess Kaiulani Hotel, and directing advertising and media development for over ten Sheraton resorts.

Dr. Remington's academic career began at Chemeketa Community College, in the field of Hospitality. At the same time she was an industry consultant for U.S. hotels, tour companies and destination resorts, and was elected Commissioner to the East Salem, Oregon Water Board. In 1990 she joined Florida International University's prestigious School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. She is also a published writer, lecturer, and consultant to the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.

  • Assistant Professor at Florida International University's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management in Miami, Florida and is a Certified Hospitality Educator.

  • Teaches research, planning and development of Hospitality Marketing Strategies, Travel and Tourism Marketing, Fundamentals of Tourism, and Travel and Tourism Law.

  • In addition, she specializes in Business/Hospitality Law, Management, Human Resources, Lodging, Sales, Advertising, and Promotion.

  • As a counselor and student advisor, she serves on the university's Curriculum Committee, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management's Curriculum Committee, and is a past member of the Eco-Tourism Council, Student Recruitment Marketing Committee, and the T.I.P. Award Committee.

  • She has received awards and recognition in the University community for her excellence in teaching.

  • As a writer she has published articles for academic and professional journals, including her most current article "Tourism. Who Needs It?", "Tourists. Who Needs Them?", "Tourism: What's in a name?", and is currently working on a textbook, "Tourism Marketing and Destination Development in the Global Arena" and a reference text on Employment Opportunities in the Travel Industry.

  • She is a member of the Travel Industry Association of America (T.I.A.). Past memberships include the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (C.H.R.I.E.), the Airport West Chamber of Commerce, West Dade Federation of Homeowner Associations (Vice-President), Costa del Sol Homeowners Association (Vice-President), Miami Airport Noise Abatement Committee (Chair), and the Hospitality Systems Advisory Council for Chemeketa Community College.
