ANTHONY G. MARSHALL

Anthony G. Marshall
1939-2006

Anthony G. Marshall, Dean Emeritus of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University passed away at his home in Orlando , Florida on December 6, 2006, after courageously battling brain cancer. Marshall , who was the founding Assistant Dean of the School, became Associate Dean shortly after the School opened in 1972. In 1982 he was made Dean of the School and served in the role with distinction for 16 years. At Florida International University , he was the senior dean and publisher of the FIU Hospitality Review. He was a widely known and respected educator, lecturer, columnist, lawyer, and hospitality management professional. Friends and colleagues remember him for his collegial leadership style, passion for the hospitality industry, broad knowledge, signature wit and trademark bowtie. After 27 years at Florida International University he accepted a leadership position as president of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. In 2005, Marshall resigned from EI to return to academia, accepting the Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association Professorship in Lodging Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando .

Marshall was recipient of a commendation medal from the United States Air Force, the Diplomate Award from the National Restaurant Association, Lamp of Knowledge from AH&LA, Champion of Education from Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education, and Innkey Award from the Greater Miami and Beaches Hotel Association. But it was the positive influence he had on hundreds of students for which he will be remembered. One FIU alumnus said " Tony woke up the showman in all of us. While he was an educator he exuded HOSPITALITY in every breath that he took. And he instilled that in thousand's of us who should be on our knees today thanking the Good Lord for that fleeting chance that we once had the opportunity to spend a second of our lives ... to have them shaped in one fashion or another ... to have our minds stretched just one more half an inch ... push to cross the line in the sand only he could draw ... and remember always the passion he put forth in ALL that he did ... in an effort to perhaps, get us to do the same."

Prior to his tenure as Dean of the School of Hospitality Management , Marshall was a hospitality management consultant in New York City . He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel Administration from the University of New Hampshire and a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University , College of Law . He was a member of the New York Bar Association. His education followed four years of service in the United States Air Force, where he managed officers' clubs in the United States and Europe .

As an author, Marshall entertained and informed countless readers through two books: Don't Lose Your Hotel by Accident, published by Advanstar Communications of Cleveland; and Hotel Restaurant and Travel Law, with co-authors Karen L. Morris and Norman G. Cournoyer, published by Delmar Publishers of New York.

Marshall 's semi-monthly column, "At Your Risk," published in Hotel & Motel Management magazine was a favorite of hospitality professionals. It focused on accident prevention, security and other hospitality management issues, and displayed Marshall 's signature common sense, good nature, and wit.

Marshall was born in Rochester , New York on April 1, 1939, and is survived by his younger brother, Robert. He will be greatly missed by his friends, colleagues, students and readers. Joseph West, Dean of FIU's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management said " Tony left an indelible mark on the School which will be difficult for those of us who follow to emulate."

A memorial service will be held at the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University at 3:00PM on January 17, 2007 in the Hospitality Management Building (room HM135).
