Florida International University’s Wine Study Abroad Program in La Rioja, Spain will offer the unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s most famous and oldest wine regions. This course will surpass a tourist experience as the students will be surrounded and immersed in one of Europe’s oldest and most respected vineyard regions.

Location Description
The region of La Rioja has cultivated vineyards for approximately 2,000 years. The participating students will learn about the region, its influence on the wine industry, the regions geography and topography, grape varietals, La Rioja’s culture, cuisine, markets and vineyards and will experience, first-hand, the Spanish wine industry.
La Rioja is in the northern part of Spain at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains. The capital city, Logrono occupies the former Roman settlement of Variea. La Rioja has long been considered Spain’s greatest wine region. Students will live and learn at the El Palacio de Canillas, in the famed La Rioja Alta region, which is also a town of 123 permanent residents and is surrounded by vineyards in all directions.
Activities/Trips
Visit the local monasteries, wineries in Rioja Alta, Rioja Alvasia and Rioja Baja and the Abbey of Canas. Students will also receive a historical education including the Romans and the Moors, learn about winemaking at Rioja Visi University, participate in sensory evaluations and visit the Enolohical Station in Haro.
Housing
Students will be housed in the El Palacio de Canillas, a stunning 100-years-old property that has been modernized into a school and double-occupancy dormitory.
Cost
The cost for this program is estimated at $3,500 and includes airfare, accommodations, transportation, 2 meals/day (American Breakfast and Main Meal), study abroad fee, health insurance, and all class activities/tours. The program cost does not include tuition (at in-state rates for all participants) or personal expenses.

January 23 - $250 Deposit Due (Full refund, less a $100 administrative fee, for cancellations requested before February 15)
February 15 - $2,000 Second Payment Due. (Full refund, less 50% of the program fee, for cancellations requested before March 1)
March 1 - No refunds after this date.
March 15 - $1,250 Final Payment Due
