Carnival Foundation founded the Carnival Gold Scholars program at the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University. The program awards renewable, full-tuition scholarships, including room and board, of up to $20,000 each to five new qualifying students every year.
Carnival Foundation also added a scholarship endowment known as the Carnival Bridge Scholars. The program supports junior and senior students who are in jeopardy of not graduating due to financial constraints, and it enables them to complete their education on time.
Chaplin School Hospitality & Tourism Management also is home to the Carnival Student Center funded by Carnival Foundation. The facility is a gathering place for more than 1,500 students annually.

Danaisy Abascal-Yero took hospitality by storm. From her very first day, Danaisy could be found volunteering for every event possible and making connections with anyone she came in contact with. This fall semester, Danaisy had a chance to attend a Leadership POD in Washington, DC, volunteer at Art Basel and FIU Brewfest, and was one of only two students selected to assist with working the FIU Alumni event in New York. She currently has an overall GPA of 3.97.
Keyshawn Cole has had a very challenging year. After starting the semester strongly, personal and family issues derailed him for part of the fall 2019 semester. With the help of Kathy Martin and other support staff on campus, he remains committed to succeeding in the years to come and is on the right track again. He currently has an overall GPA of 2.45.
Tia Yahnke has truly tested her limits this semester and gone outside of her comfort zone. Tia holds an overall GPA of 3.45. Tia currently works full time at a Breezeway Café on campus. When not in class or at work, Tia finds the time to volunteer for events such as FIU Brewfest and Art Basel. For next semester, Tia has signed up to work Super Bowl, the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival and Ultra Music Festival.
Jose Bernal had an eventful year. Jose has maintained his grades while working full time, and currently has an overall GPA of 3.96. Like his fellow scholars, he too will be participating in the 2020 Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
Celesse Temes was very successful both personally and academically. She continued to excel academically and has maintained an overall GPA of 3.95. Rather than working in her first semester, Celesse chose to gain experience by volunteering in different events around campus. She volunteered at FIU Brewfest, Art Basel and attended a leadership program in Washington, DC.
Vicky Chapas remains committed to succeeding both academically and professionally. She maintains a 3.77 GPA and full-time employment as a Spa Concierge at the Eden Roc in Miami Beach. This past summer, she participated in FIU’s Hospitality at Sea program. In the spring of 2020, Vicky will volunteer at the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
Leeanne Grunow continues to network and make a name for herself in the beverage industry. She continues to work events with the President and Co-Founder of the American Fine Wine Competition, Shari Gherman. During the Summer of 2020, Leeanne will look to obtain an internship in NAPA Valley and intends to participate in the National Student Exchange program in Fall 2020. She currently has an overall GPA of 3.57.
Ariane Uy had a very successful fall 2019 semester, achieving a 3.83 GPA and participating in several leadership opportunities. Her interest in baking and catering pushed her to attend the International Baking Industry Exposition conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. This opportunity created connections with colleagues and innovators in the field to develop and exchange ideas with industry figureheads and professionals. Ariane currently works full time at Bolay Restaurant.
Kayla Abad remains on track to complete her Master of Science in Hospitality Management degree in May 2020. She currently has an overall GPA of 3.86. Kayla continues to make strides in her chosen area of concentration and currently serves as the Human Resources Services Coordinator for Carnival Cruise Lines.
Tyriq Askew had a busy fall 2019 semester. Outside of being a full time student, Tyriq invested a lot of his time in working as a lead for major events such as Art Basel and FIU Brewfest. He currently has an overall GPA of 2.97. For the spring 2020 semester he plans to continue working in different events to gain experience and expand his network. He hopes to be involved with the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival, Super Bowl and Ultra Music Festival.
Tameria Benjamin is pursuing a career in food science and continues to demonstrate academic excellence with a 3.60 overall GPA. Tameria continues to be an active leader in the hospitality community. Outside of assisting Chaplin School professor Dr. Imran Ahmad on his research with food produce safety, Tameria is also an assistant with StartUP FIU Food and a teaching assistant in our culinary classes.
Jorge Gutierrez '19 MS'19
Jorge Gutierrez graduated with his Master of Science in Hospitality Management in December 2019. He completed his Master’s degree with a GPA of 3.48. Through hard work and commitment, Jorge was able to complete both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in under three years. Jorge is currently working full time as an instructor for Responsible Vendors, Inc.
Tatiana Molina has taken advantage of every opportunity awarded to her and was the only person selected as an intern for Carnival Corporation’s Guest Experience Maximization team. Upon return, Tatiana hopes to pursue a summer internship opportunity at Carnival Cruise Lines. Tatiana hopes to maintain this internship until she graduates in December 2020. She currently has an overall GPA of 3.86.
Serena Beze recently graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management degree in December 2019 with a cumulative 3.34 GPA. She was accepted into Chaplin’s Combined B.S. & M.S. (4+1) Program, set to begin full time in January 2019. This April, Serena will volunteer at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Portland, OR. Serena aspires to own and operate her own coffee bar in the future.
Taisha Coradin was accepted into Chaplin’s Combined B.S. & M.S. (4+1) Program and will continue to take classes as she works towards an April 2020 graduation date. She currently has an overall GPA of 2.97. This past summer, Taisha had the opportunity to participate in a study-abroad trip to Genoa, Italy. On this trip, she was able to bond with classmates, learn about Italy’s rich history and experience its amazing culture.
Leah Esper '19
Leah Esper remains on track to complete her Master of Science in Hospitality Management degree in May 2019. She currently has an overall GPA of 3.96. This past semester she served as the content strategist for a start-up recruiting company called Fetcher. This spring semester, Leah will start in her new role as marketing coordinator for Swan Restaurant.
Dyani Roberts '19
Dyani Roberts graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in December 2019 with a cumulative 3.70 GPA. She was accepted into Chaplin’s Combined B.S. & M.S. (4+1) Program to begin full time in January 2019. Dyani continues to work full time at the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel as a meeting concierge and hopes to become catering services manager.
Faith Snow graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in December 2019 with a cumulative 3.46 GPA. She has been accepted to the Master of Science in Hospitality Management program to begin full time in January 2019. Faith currently works full time as a spa concierge at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa in Aventura, FL.
Destinee Gutierrez graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in April 2019. She continues to work full time as a sales coordinator with the Grand Beach Hotel in Miami Beach.

Heissel Mayorga graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in July 2018. Currently, she serves as the human resources manager at the Holiday Inn Miami hotel, where she continues to apply theories and content from the classroom to the workplace.
Dalila Pineda '19
Dalila Pineda graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in April 2019. Dalila recently returned from a three-month trip to Europe where she was able to gain valuable insights on the hospitality industry. She has returned to work full time at the Hilton Cabana Miami Beach hotel.

Deborah Sanchez graduated with her Master of Science in Hospitality Management in August 2019. Deborah continues to work full time as an executive assistant at Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon.

John Simpson graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in December 2018. He obtained his CHIA designation and is currently working as a complex revenue manager with Highgate Hotels.
