Marvin and Hazel Shanken DEI Scholarship
About The Scholarship
To honor Marvin Shanken—the creator, publisher, editor and producer some of the most widely read and attended hospitality industry publications and events, e.g., Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado—and his wife, Hazel, The Marvin and Hazel Shanken DEI Scholarship Fund will look to elevate the next generation of diverse hospitality students. In the pursuit of greater equity in the Hospitality and Tourism industry, The Marvin and Hazel Shanken DEI Scholarship Fund will be a once renewable scholarship reserved for diverse junior, senior and graduate students—with an emphasis on Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) students pursuing a hospitality education at FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Understanding the industry’s need to enhance the student diversity pipeline across senior levels of the hospitality and tourism industry, this scholarship fund will total $7,700 per academic year—and is intended to cover recipients’ room, board and or tuition expenses. The Marvin and Hazel Shanken DEI Scholarship Fund will initially support up to four students per academic year—expanding as the fund size grows.
Scholarship recipients will be selected by a committee designated by the FIU DEI Endowed Chair of the Chaplin School using holistic criteria—factoring in GPA, need, leadership experience and career goals.
Eligibility criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- The scholarships will be awarded to junior, senior, and/or graduate level students enrolled in or accepted for admission to the School.
