Domestic Student Application Process:

English Language Proficiency Requirements
Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated American students, must demonstrate proficiency in English. Applicants who attended undergraduate institutions that do not teach in English must also meet this requirement, even if the institution is located within the United States. FIU only accepts test scores sent directly from the testing agency as official.
Exam Score Requirements:
- TOEFL iBT/PBT:4.5 on the iBT TOEFL (Effective January 21, 2026; for tests taken prior to this date, the required minimum score is 80 on the iBT, or equivalent. Please see https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/scores/understand-scores.html for more information.)
- IELTS: 6.5
- Duolingo English Test: 110
- 53 Pearson Test of English – Academic
- Cambridge English – Advanced
Additional English Proficiency Options:
- FIU’s English Language Institute Level Six: Successful completion with passing grades for all content areas
- Applicants from institutions with regional accreditation or other English-speaking countries who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree.
The English Language Institute at FIU offers the PBT TOEFL® which is accepted university wide.
